Staying Safe on the Internet: What to Do If Someone Is Mean

Hi there! The internet is a fun place where you can play games, watch videos, and chat with friends. But sometimes, people can be mean online. It’s important to know how to stay safe and what to do if this happens.  Let’s learn a bit about what you can you, and why maybe, being online all the time, isn’t the best idea!

Not Everyone Is Online All the Time

It might seem like your friends are always online, but that’s not always true. They might have times when they’re not allowed to use their devices, just like you. It can be a good idea to talk with your friends to find out when they can be online. That way, you can plan to go online at the same time and play together!

When you can’t use your device, you can make plans to hang out in person. Playing outside, riding bikes, or just talking face-to-face can be really fun!

It’s Okay to Feel Bored Sometimes

I know that we want to be on our phones, or computers or ipads because we feel bored, and there is nothing to do!  Adults feel the same way.  BUT! Feeling bored isn’t bad—it can actually be good for you! When you’re bored, your imagination kicks in. You might come up with a new game, draw a cool picture, or think of an awesome story. So next time you’re bored, see it as a chance to be creative!

Then share your creativity with others!

Now, being online can be fun, and there are a ton of interesting things to see and do, but..

What Do we do if Someone Is Mean Online

If someone is being unkind to you on the internet, here’s what you can do:

1. Don’t Reply

  • Stay Calm: It’s normal to feel upset, but try to keep your cool.
  • Ignore Them: Don’t respond to mean messages. Sometimes, bullies want you to react.

2. Save the Messages

  • Take Screenshots: This way, you have proof of what happened.
  • Keep Records: Don’t delete the messages until you’ve shown them to an adult.

3. Always tell a Trusted Adult

  • Speak Up: Talk to your parents, a teacher, or another grown-up you trust.  If you have an older brother or sister, tell them!
  • It’s Okay to Ask for Help: You’re not tattling—you’re protecting yourself and maybe even other people you care about.  If people are being mean to you, they are likely being mean to your friends.

4. Block and Report Them

  • Block the Bully: Most apps and games let you block people.  If you feel upset, or sad, or scared, block them!
  • Report the Behaviour: Let the app or website know what’s happening.

5. Protect Your Information

  • Keep Personal Info Private: Don’t share your address, phone number, or passwords to anyone for any reason.
  • Use Nicknames: If you can, use a fun nickname instead of your real name.

And for you…

  • Be Kind Online: Treat others the way you want to be treated.  This goes for both online and in-person.
  • Choose Good Friends: Only chat with people you know in real life.  This is super important, if someone adds you that you are not familiar with, you should tell a trusted adult.
  • Enjoy Offline Activities: Spend time doing things that don’t involve screens, like playing sports, reading, or drawing.
  • Plan Online Time: Talk with your friends about when you’ll be online so you can connect without spending too much time on your device.

Remember

The internet is a great place to learn and have fun, but it’s important to stay safe. If someone is mean to you online, or if something makes you feel uncomfortable, don’t keep it to yourself—tell a trusted adult.

And guess what? Feeling bored sometimes is totally okay! It gives you a chance to explore new hobbies and let your creativity shine.

You’re not alone, and there’s always someone who can help. Stay safe and keep being awesome!

‘Till next time!
